Abstract

544,818. Lifesaving-appliance. FLEMING, I. R., and FLEMING, F. E. Oct. 26, 1940, No. 15728. [Class 77] Lifeboats and rafts are fitted with boxes 18 each containing a float 10 capable of being thrown by hand a considerable distance and attached by a life-line 16 to a reel 17. The float may consist of a closed rectangular canvas bag stuffed tightly with kapok or similar buoyant material. Rope hand-grips 13, 13a are stitched to the bag. The lid 19 of the box is attached by chains 20 and hook-and-eye catches. The floats may be coated with luminous paint or fitted with electric lamp. An alternative construction of float consists of two sheets of expanded rubber stiffened by an intermediate sheet of ply-wood.
