Abstract

537,115. Inflatable air casings. COTTER, H. R. G. (Thornhill, C.J.). Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31398. [Class 113(i)] To increase the buoyancy of ships in case of emergency an inflatable fabric envelope f is placed in a rigid container e which is disposed in an upright position in a cabin or other compartment in a ship. On inflation of the container from an air-container j the paper or other seals retaining the front panel g<2> of the container in position are broken allowing the envelope to expand sideways into the compartment. The valve controlling the air cylinder j' may be operated electrically from a central control station. In a modification the container may be hung from the gunwale of a boat.
