[Class 64 (i)] A chequer brickwork furnace regenerator is built up of superposed courses of bricks 1, 2, 3 of the same length but of varying depths and thicknesses to afford vertical passages 4 which increase in cross sectional area progressively in the direction of flow of the hot gases, that is, as shown, downwardly, and which consequently converge in the direction of the upward flow of the air or gases to be preheated.
