[Class 20 (iii) ] Rack and pinion mechanism controls the up and down movements of the co-planar central sashes 27, 32 of a four-sash window. The window-frame 1 is flanged and channelled to receive H-supports 4 for the fixed upper and lower sashes 8, 18. Three-sectioned continuous guide rails 22 for the movable sashes are fixed in the side frame 10. The upper sash comprises H-shaped side and bottom pane-enclosing members ; the bottom member 36 engages an upstanding ridge on the upper edge of the lower sash when the window is closed. Substantially co-axial pinions 37 are mounted on each side of the window frame, but in advance of the plane of the movable sashes, and are engaged on opposite sides by racks 34, 35 secured to the upper and lower sashes respectively. Operating handles 46 are mounted on the cross-member 26, or a handle may be provided for 39 operating a worm-wheel on a protruding end of the shaft 42. Universal joints may be mounted in this shaft adjacent to each pinion 37. The window may be fastened in the closed position by hand-wheels 52 the spindle-ends of which are tapered for pressing against the sloping upper end of the racks 34. Gaskets and weather stripping are fitted to afford water-tight joints.
