543,087. Belt and chain gearing. DORAN BROS., Inc. June 3, 1940, No. 9688. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A circular member 16 rotating at constant speed, drives a non-circular member 20 by means of a belt or chain 21 passing around the peripheries of the members, so that the periphery of the driven member 20 adjacent the tight side of the belt or chain 21 moves with constant peripheral velocity. The varying.speed of the slack side of the belt may be allowed for by a belt tension device comprising a pair of wheels 44, 45, carried on a member 37 journalled on a pivot 36, the wheels 44, 45, engaging opposite sides of the chain or belt and being, spring urged to move in a clockwise direction about the pivot 36. As shown, the member 37 has an arm 46 linked to an arm 34a on a hub member 34, the latter being acted upon by a spiral spring. The device is used in a machine tool for machining a member having a shape substantially similar to that of the member 20, the abrading tool being positioned so that the cutting speed remains constant.
