Course-recording apparatus. - Variable-speed gearing suitable for use in the course-recording apparatus described in Specification 300,525 comprises a driving-wheel 3 with teeth which can yield inwardly against springs gearing with a wheel 7 with straight teeth. The wheel 7 is fast on a spindle 8 which can be turned about an axis in the plane of Fig. 1 so as to vary the inclination of the straight teeth to the paths of the rows of pin teeth, and so vary in a continuous manner the speed and direction of motion of shaft 8. Shaft 8 is supported in a ring 9 which is turnable in its own plane by a handle 12 projecting through a slotted member 10. A bevel pair 13, 14 makes connection at all times to a driven shaft 2 fixed in position.
