475,475. Variable - speed gearing. NIGRA, F. April 16, 1936, No. 13256/37. Divided out of 478,423. [Class 80 (ii)] In a variable-speed belt drive utilizing a stepped pulley, means are provided for tensioning the belt and keeping the 'driven pulley in the plane of the belt throughout the range of speeds. An electric motor 12 has on its shaft a stepped pulley 15 connected by a belt 16 to a pulley 17 on the shaft of which is a pulley 19 connected by a belt 10 to the part to be driven, e.g. a rotary duplicator. To maintain the belts 16, 10 constantly in tension, the shaft 18 is carried in a frame 21 pivoted at 23 to another frame 22 which is again pivoted at 25 to lugs 28 on a turntable 24, the frame 21 being connected to the pivot 25 by a spring 27 which roughly bisects the angle between the mean directions of the belts 16, 10. The belt is shifted by a fork 31 mounted on an arm 35 carried by a shaft 34 actuated by a lever 37, the hinged handle portion 47 of which is adapted to engage notches in a plate 39. The fork 31 is caused to move in a line parallel to the mean conical surface of the pulley so as to engage the belt at a constant distance therefrom. The turntable 24 may also be positively moved to maintain the pulley 17 in the plane of the belt by an arm 32 secured thereto being connected by a link 36 to the arm 35.
