Abstract

336,919. Laffineur, E., and Collin, L. Feb. 16, 1929, [Convention date]. Moulding-machines.-In a device for forming ovals such as an ellipsograph, or a machine for tracing, cutting, moulding, or plastering oval frames or for bevel grinding the edges of oval glass plates, the work axis d is rotated about a fixed point x in a circle having a radius e d equal to a quarter of the difference between the major and minor axes of the desired ellipse a, the work at the same time being rotated on its axis in the reverse direction z at half the speed of the first mentioned movement x. In this way every point on the ellipse a passes through a point b where a tool may be located. In one form of apparatus, Figs. 7 and 9 for bevelling glass plates a sleeve 4 driven from a shaft 5 is connected by a coupling 10 to an upper sleeve 8 having a flange 11, and pins 13, 24 on a plate 14 pass respectively through a hole 13<1> and slot 12 in the flange. The plate 14 carries the work holder 16 on which the glass is secured either by clamps or by suction applied to the passage 18. An internal gear 15 rotatably mounted on the plate 14 drives a pinion 22 engaging a pinion 21 mounted on the pin 13 and engaging a central fixed wheel 3. The gearing is such that the plate 14 is driven at twice the speed of the ring 15 and in the reverse direction. The plate 14 is adjusted by means of the slot 12 so that its centre and thus also the work centre d is eccentric to the fixed point e at the centre of the wheel 3, the eccentricity being equal to a quarter of the difference between the major and minor axes of the desired ellipse. In order to maintain the peripheral speed of the work past the grinding-wheel approximately constant the shaft 5 is driven at a variable speed by means of the gearing shown in Fig. 10. The driving shaft 29 carries a pinion 28 engaging a wheel 26 carried by an adjustable link 30. The shaft 5 is driven by a pin 27 engaging in a slotted crank 25 and by varying the eccentricity of the wheel 26 with respect to the shaft 5 the speed of this latter shaft is varied in the required manner. This mechanism may be employed to drive a number of machines arranged in series, the driving wheel 7, Fig. 7, being connected to a second shaft such as 5 mounted in a bearing 34.
