Apparatus for sharpening a scratcher type saw chain which has centrally disposed raker teeth and oppositely disposed right and left cutter teeth of greater height than the raker teeth comprises an attachment for use with a scratcher type chain saw having a guide member for supporting the saw chain for longitudinal movement through a curved path, the attachment including a frame, means for attaching the frame to the chain saw guide member and a grinding wheel rotatably mouuted on the frame so that, when the wheel is in its operative position, it is adjacent to and axially parallel with the guide member, whereby the grinding wheel makes abrading engagement with the ends of the successive teeth as they move through the curved path, the periphery of the grinding wheel being formed with a central portion for engaging the ends of the raker teeth and opposite side portions for engaging the ends of the right and left cutter teeth, the central portion being of greater diameter than the side portions. A chain saw has a motor 10 to the frame of which is secured a guide member such as parallel sided saw bar 12 having an arcuate nose 13 and having a scratcher saw chain 14 trained thereabout. The sharpening device includes a frame with a mounting portion 60 formed with a boss 61 fitting an opening 62 in the saw bar adjacent the nose. A stud 63 projecting from the boss receives a clamping nut 64. The frame includes parallel bars 70 on which is slidably mounted a housing 72 carrying the shaft 71 of the grinding wheel 55, this being driven from the motor 10 through a flexible shaft 79 and bevel graining housed in the member 72. Movement of the housing 72 along the bars 70 is effected by a screw 84, by which the grinding wheel can be brought into contact with a crushing roller 92 rotated by a handle 94.
