542,538. Open fire places. BERLOWITZ, M., and CLIMATOR, Ltd. Aug. 24, 1940, No. 13424. [Class 126] The combustion gases pass through an opening 1 arranged a few inches above the grate 3 in the fire back 2 to a flue-passage 5 leading upwards to a horizontal flue-passage 6 having downward branches 11 arranged at each side of the fireplace and connected at the bottom by openings 12 to vertical branches 13 leading to the main flue 14. A damper 17 between the passage 5 and flue 14 may be opened to facilitate lighting the fire. The opening 1 may be fitted with a grid 4 having slots of adjustable width or a draught-regulating damper 21 may be provided in the passage 5. A gas flame or electric heater may be arranged in the flue passages to increase the draught when lighting the fire or, if the draught is very poor, a fan may be provided in the flue passages. The flue passages are made of heat-retaining material such as fireclay and are faced with bright tiles to radiate the heat into the room. The passages may be arranged to heat the walls of two or more adjacent rooms simultaneously.
