Abstract

540,730. Relief valves. PUGH, C. A., GIBSON, J. B., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. April 24, 1940, No. 7412. [Class 135] A spring-loaded relief valve is provided with means for applying a frictional load to the movable valve member to prevent fluttering. In the form shown in the Figure a spherically-faced valve member 20 co-operates with a seat 16 removably mounted in a partition 14 separating a main conduit having inlet and outlet connections 11, 12 from a byepass conduit 13. The valve member has a flat rear face held against the end face of a carrier 17 by spring-fingers 21. Other spring fingers 23 on the carrier are slightly splayed to engage frictionally with a cylindrical bore 18. The loading spring 25 is adjusted by an abutment 26 screwed into the bore 18 by a rotatable key 27. The Provisional Specification describes a modification particularly adapted for use with sub-atmospheric pressures in which a flat-faced valve member forms the end of a hollow cylindrical member adapted to slide over a fixed piston. Lubricant grooves are formed in both the cylinder and piston.
