Abstract

540,341. Rubber &c. mills. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd. May 24, 1940, No. 9223. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1939. [Class 86] In a rubber &c. mixing mill in which a blade, movable into and out of contact with one of the rolls, is traversed edgewise from end to end, the means for reversing the end-to-end movement is operated by the traversing means. For this purpose, the blade is traversed by a screw and nut mechanism driven by a reversing motor and the screwed shaft operates cam mechanism which actuates controlling switches; the blade is moved to and from the roll by a motordriven screw and nut, controlled similarly from the same shaft. The blade 59, Fig. 1, is carried by a head 34 mounted on guides 21 and traversed by a screw 24 operated, through reduction gearing 26, 27, by a reversing motor 28. As shown in Fig. 4, the shaft 24 drives a shaft 71 through two worms 66, 67, 69, 70 in series, the shaft having a hub 75 with a cam-plate 78 adjustably secured thereto and carrying cams 80, 81. The latter operate switches for reversing the motor 28. The blade is raised and lowered by a second motor 44. Fig. 2, driving a nut 40 on a screwed shaft 50 carrying a member 53 which supports the blade, the motor being controlled by a further cam-plate 95 on the hub 75.
