Abstract
493,428. Rolling. TUBE REDUCING CORPORATION. March 28, 1938, No. 9491. Convention date, March 31, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] The feed spindle M of a pilger mill with reciprocated rolls F carries a gear-wheel nut 3 which is continuously rotated and so during the roll-working stroke moves to the left, being free to do so by the cam 5 moving thrust lever 11 to the left, but when the pause in the working stroke takes place, the cam 5 has moved round to allow the lever 11 to be thrust by the spring 9 or compressed air &c. to the right, thus moving the nut 3 and the spindle M also to the right, so imparting an increment of feed to the work. The increment of feed may be varied by varying the speed of the regulatable motor 12 which drives the nut 3 through gearing 22, 21, 18, 19, 17, 13, 14 to the nut 3, but if a fixed increment is desired, the nut 3 may be driven from the roll driving motor. Alternatively, a Ward-Leonard coupling may be used for the motor 3 and the mill motor. To enable the feed device to be rapidly returned to its initial position on completion of rolling hand-operated clutches 16 and 15 are used by means of which the gear 14 may be directly coupled with the motor 12, during which motion the nut 3 abuts against the stop 23. Rubber cushioning discs and thrust bearings may be used for each side of the nut 3, Fig. 4 (not shown), to abut against.
