Abstract

1,270,981. Rolling mills. MANNESMANNMEER A.G. 15 July, 1969 [16 July, 1968], No. 35456/69. Heading B3M. A pilgrim mill includes a main motor 1 which both reciprocates a roll stand 3, and drives feeding and indexing mechanisms for a workpiece through gear-boxes 5, 6 and 9. Two output shafts 12 and 13 are driven from the gear-box 9, the shafts being in threaded engagement with reversible feeding slides 10 and 11. The gear-box 5 drives a chuck 8 for a workpiece, while the gear-box 6 changes the rotation of an input shaft 4 into adjustable rotation and reciprocation of an output shaft 31, Fig. 6. The gear-box 9 transmits the motion of the shaft 31 to the output shafts 12 and 13 driving the feeding slides 12 and 13, and incorporates a reversing mechanism for the output shafts. Rotation of input shaft 4, Fig. 6, is transmitted through gears 28 to 21 to the shaft 31, the gears 25 and 26 being interchangeable to vary the transmission ratio of the gear-box. The shaft 4 also rotates a cam 16 which pivots a follower arm 17 about a bearing 18 to reciprocate a shaft 20 and hence the shaft 31. Movement of the bearing 18 permits the stroke of the shaft 31 to be varied. The rotating and reciprocating movement of the shaft 31, Fig. 5, is transmitted through a common worm shaft to worm gears 32 and 33. These gears rotate similar gears 36, 37 through one or other of two clutches 34, 35. The gears 36, 37 are of opposite hand and are coupled by a common worm shaft, such that when one clutch is disengaged, the gears rotate in one sense, and when the other clutch is disengaged they rotate in the opposite sense. Output shafts 12 and 13 driven by the gears therefore cause movement of the slides 10 and 11 towards or away from each other. The operation of the clutches is hydraulic and is controlled by the slides reaching their end positions.
