Abstract

322,442. Lund, A. D. Sept. 3, 1928. Flat extended surfaces, surfacing. - In a machine for grinding flat surfaces on metal &c., the work is mounted on a table D reciprocating on a bed B and the grinding-wheel m is reciprocated transversely of the table on a vertically movable cross-piece C slidable by hand- or automatically-operated means on side supports A. The grinding-wheel spindle is mounted in a casing d having faces d' movable on slides f on the piece C, and the casing is reciprocated by a screw h driven, through worm-gearing h<1>, k and a shaft 1 driven, through gearing 6, 7, 3, 4, 2a, from an electric motor e<1> ; reversal of the direction of the motor at the ends of the transverse strokes is effected by switches 28, 29 operated by members 33, 34 on the casing d. The shaft 1 may be rotated by a hand-wheel 12<a>, through a clutch 11. Vertical movement of the grinding-wheel is effected by means of screws n driven by a handwheel 27, or, through worm-gearing 16, 17, from a shaft o carrying a wheel 18, which may be engaged with! the wheel 2<a> by sliding the wheel on its shaft; a clutch 14 movable with the wheel unclutches the drive of the shaft 1 when the wheel 18 is to be driven. The wheel 2a is moved by a member 23 actuated by rack gearing 21, 22 operated by a hand lever 19<a> on a rod 19. Movement of the lever also closes appropriate switches, and switches 24, 25 limit the vertical movement of the piece C. Specification 223,946 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
