UNITED S JAY E. LEI-THAN, OF CANTON, O'HIO.
- PLANELR.
Application filed July 9, 1920. Serial No. 394,919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAY E. LEHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Planer, of which the following is a specific'ation.
This invention relates to planers and has for its objects the provision of a plane-r in which the column and the levers and wheels controlling the operation of the device are all located upon the operating side of the table in order that large pieces of work may be shaped thereon, the operator taking his position upon the operating side of the planer at a point where he can control all of the operating mechanism without interference from the work which may extend over the side of the table; and to provide a planer of this character which is simple, compact and easily operated.
With these objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described,
= illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a planer embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
A practical embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The device comprises the base 1 upon which is slidably mounted the reciprocating table 2 arranged to be reciprocated longitudinally upon said base by suitable mechanism, the work being clamped upon said table in the usual manner.
The column 3 is located upon the operators side of the table in order that work that is considerably wider than the table may project beyond the opposite edge of the table and thus not interfere with the operator of the machine, whose position is upon the side of the machine adjacent the column in proper position to grasp the different operating levers and'wheels to control the operation of the machine.
The arm 4 is mounted upon the column 3 and arranged to be raised and lowered thereon in the usual manner through the screw threaded shaft 5 upon the upper extremity of which is fixed a beveled pinion 6 meshing with the beveled pinion 7 which is fixed upon a shaft having a squared extremity 8 to which a wrench or like tool may be applied.
The tool head 9 is mounted upon the arm .4: and arranged to be moved laterally thereon by means of the usual screw threaded shaft 10, this shaft having a squared extremity 11 to which a crank or the like may be applied for operating the cross feed. The vertical feed is controlled through the shaft 12 which is also provided with a squared end 13 to which a crank or the like may be applied. The usual gearing operated through the shaft 12 co-operates with the rack 14 to produce the vertical feed. The rack 14 is arranged to be adjusted through the link 15 and screw 16 by means of the hand wheel 17.
A hand wheel 18 operates a suitable clampin mechanism for tightening the arm upon the column. Power is applied to the machine through the pulley 19 which is connected by means of a belt with any suitable source of power. Levers 20 and 21 are provided for controlling the speed changing mechanism for the table 2 and a hand wheel 22 operates suitable clamping means for locking the table when desired.
From the above description and an inspection of the accompanying drawings it will be evident that a planer is provided in which the column and all of the controlling means for the operation of the planer are located upon the same side of the table that is upon the operators side, thus allowing work of any size to be mounted upon the table, the work projecting beyond the opposite edge of the table from the operators side thereof, the operator being thus free to operate the machine without interference by any work which may project beyond the table.
I claim:
A planer comprising a base, a reciprocating table upon said base, a column uponthe base at one side of the table, a vertically movable arm upon the column, extending over the table, a horizontally movable tool head upon the arm, a vertically movable tool feed upon the head and means for controlling the vertical feed of the tool, and means upon the column and base upon the opposite side to the table for controlling the operation of the machine and comprising a hand Wheel for controlling the locking of the table, levers for controlling the speed changing mechanism, a hand Wheel for controlling the locking of the arm upon the column, means for controlling the raising and lowering of the arm, means for moving the tool head longitudinally upon the arm.
In testimony that I claim the above l have hereunto subscribed my name.
JAY E. LEHMAN.
