Abstract
261,918. Taylor, H. E. P., and Farrel Foundry & Machine Co. Nov. 30, 1925. Rollers, treating. - A machine for grinding rollers with a cylindrical, concave, or convex surface, consists of a bed 10 having inverted V- shaped ways 20, 21 upon which slides a carriage 27 having mounted thereon mechanism for causing reciprocation of the carriage and for driving the grinding-wheel 141; the work is mounted upon centres 14, 17. In the carriage are openings 28, 29 through which pass guard plates 22, 23 for the slide ways. The carriage is reciprocated by a rack 30 on the bed and a pinion 32 carried at the lower end of a shaft 33 mounted in the carriage and driven by a worm wheel 43 loosely mounted thereon and having means to take up lost motion in the gearing. The wheel 43 is driven in either direction by a worm 46, Fig. 16, operated either through gears 49, 50 or gears 48, 53, 55 from a shaft 52 by means of a sliding clutch 57 keyed on the shaft; the shaft is driven by a wheel 64 which may be clutched to the shaft by a clutch collar 68 movable by a lever 87. The wheel 64 is driven by a wheel 86, Fig. 15, which may be driven at either of two speeds through two speed gearing 76, 78 or 77, 79 brought into operation by a clutch collar 82 slidable by means of a rock shaft 83 operated by a hand lever 84, the shaft 75 carrying the gears 76, 77 being driven from an electric motor 70 by a chain 73. The reversing-mechanism for the carriage is shown in Figs. 19, 20 and comprises a plate 95 slidable on a table 96 on a standard 34 of the carriage, the plate supporting a hollow externally threaded cylinder 99, upon which are mounted nuts 100, 101 adjustable on the cylinder to control the length of stroke of the carriage. Within the cylinder is a nut 102 having a lug engaging a slot in the cylinder to prevent rotation and engaging a screwed shaft 105 driven by gearing 107, from the shaft 33; the lug on the nut 102 engages the nuts 100, 101 at the ends of its travel, thereby moving the plate 95 on the table 96. Loosely mounted in standards 97<a>, 98<a> on the table 96 is a rod 110 having at one end an arm 111 secured to a shaft 91, and secured to the rod are two blocks 112, 113 carrying rollers 114, 115 adapted to lift pawls 116, 117 from engagement with a block 120, which is loosely mounted on the rod and engages by a link 121 an arm 122 on a shaft 92 which actuates the reversing clutch 57. Springs 125, 126 serve to move the block 120 when the clutch teeth are in correct position. The rod is moved by a rack 131 on the plate 95 which engages a pinion 132 on the shaft 91. The grinding-wheel mechanism is mounted at the end of the carriage opposite to that at which the reversing mechanism is mounted and the wheel 141 is driven bv a chain 144 from a motor 143, adjustably mounted on a base 150 carried on ways 152<a>, 152b by a sub-base 152, Fig. 9, so that the wheel may be moved transversely of the carriage either by a handwheel 154 or by a motor. In order to impart a concavity cr convexity to the roll, the sub-base is pivoted at 165, at its edge near the work, to the carriage and is rocked towards and from the work by a cam wheel 167 mounted on the carriage near the opposite edge of the base and oscillated by the movements of the carriage. The cam wheel is mounted, to adjust its throw, on the squared end 171 of a shaft 172, the adjustment being made by a screw and the wheel secured in adjusted position by bolts. The shaft 172 is mounted in the carriage and is driven through worm gearing and gears 190, 191 by a shaft 192 carrying a gear wheel 193 meshing with a rack 198 on the machine-base, the wheel 193 being adapted to be clutched to the shaft by a clutch collar 194 movable by a lever 197; reciprocation of the carriage thus causes oscillation of the wheel 167 and consequently rising or falling of the grinding wheel base to cause the surface of the roll to be ground concave or convex along its length. A shaft with a squared end 203 is provided in driving connection with the shaft of gear 190 for hand setting of the cam wheel at the beginning of a grinding operation.
