582,037. Screw-and-nut mechanism. BUTLER MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd., and ALDERSON, W. July 10, 1944, No. 13110. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In screw traversing mechanism for use in machine tools where two units are to be separately and independently traversed on the same slide and never moved simultaneously, a single screw is made to function as a rotatable screw for moving one unit and as a stationary screw along which the other unit is traversed by means of nut-wheel rotated around the screw. The invention is described as applied to mechanism for elevating and lowering the cross slide B and the side tool box C of a planing machine, each vertical column A having a single screw D. For traversing the cross slide, the screw D is rotated from its upper end by gearing driven by an electric motor and co-operates with a nut B' fixed to the cross slide. The side tool box is traversed by means of a nut wheel E carried by a slide G secured to the tool box. The exterior of the wheel is formed as a worm wheel adapted to be driven by a worm mounted on a shaft extending across the front of the column and movable endwise to put the worm into or out of mesh with the worm wheel. When the worm moves into mesh, an electric switch is operated to break the circuit of the motor driving the screw D.
