Abstract
599,662. Machinery guards. FIELDING, E. C. Oct. 25, 1945, No. 28132. [Class 80 (iv)] A guard for a grinding wheel, circular saw or like rotary cutting tool comprises two overlapping half covers 1 hinged upon a common pivot pin 4 and having a pin-and-slot connection 16, 18, with a relatively stationary plate 15, a screw 11 being provided to move the pivot pin 4 so that the pin-and-slot engagement causes the half covers to be opened out or closed in to suit the diameter of the tool 2 in use. As shown, the pin 4 is carried by a lug 9 which is slidable in guides 7 in the plate 15 and has a boss 10 through which the screw 11 is screwed. The slots 16 are open-ended so that when the half covers 11 are fully extended the pins 18 leave the slots 16 and the covers can then be gripped by handles 26 and folded upwardly to expose wholly the tool 2 to enable the latter to be changed. Means may be provided to render the drive for the tool ineffective when the pins 18 are just about to leave the slots 16. Such means may comprise a nut 24 on a screwed rod 22 rotated by gearing 20, 21, from the screw 11, the nut 24 at the end of its travel acting upon a trip switch to stop the driving motor. Push-button switches 27 for starting and stopping the motor may be mounted on the plate 15. The speed of rotation of the driving motor may be varied in accordance with the position of the half covers 1 by controlling the motor from the angular movement of the screwed rod 22,
