Abstract

664,431. Hair waving appliances. KERRY, D. G. Feb. 1, 1950. [Feb. 2, 1949] No. 2863/49. Class 131. [Also in Group XXXI] A device for winding hair on a curler for permanent waving comprises a casing 1 from which an operating lever 3, movable towards and away from the casing, by pressure by one hand, projects, a spring 17 contained in the casing for returning the lever outwardly when hand pressure is released, a rotary shaft 4 projecting from the casing and carrying externally of the casing means for making temporary driving engagement with a hair curler, and gearing, contained within the casing and including a free wheel mechanism 7, for rotating the shaft in one direction only in response to inward and outward movement of the operating lever. The shaft 4, journalled in the bush 8 and supporting a socket 2 to receive the cutter, is rotated by a gear chain 18, 15, 14, 13, 12 from a toothed sector 11 rotated on a pivot 10 by the inward movement of the lever 3. In a modification, the socket axis may be parallel to the pivot axis of the lever and the device may be provided with means for securing it to the operator's clothes or person to leave both hands free to manipulate the hair. The Provisional Specification describes a form of the device having three parallel shafts.
