Abstract

537,780. Pumps. BUCHI, A. Nov. 9, 1939, No. 29741. Convention date, March 28. [Class 7(ii)] A pump 13, mechanically driven from the engine or independently, supplies air at starting or for low speeds and light loads. At higher speeds and loads an exhaust-driven blower 15 comes into action taking its air either from the atmosphere or from the blower 13. Variable speed gearing may be used to drive the blower 13. Pressure responsive automatic valves 25, 32 control the passages from the pumps 13, 15 to the intake manifold. Inter-connected throttle valves 27, 31, 28, 29 may also be placed in the conduits 19, 24, in the conduit 22 between the two pumps, and in that from the atmosphere to the pump 15. The throttles 28, 29 are reversely controlled, one being open when the other is shut. The pump 13 may be of the centrifugal or helical-vane type. For reversible engines a centrifugal blower without fixed diffuser blades should be used. One mechanically-driven pump may be associated with a number of turbo-blowers, e.g. in a V-engine where each bank has a separate blower.
