Abstract

531,970. Distilling water. YSSELMUIDEN, A. H. July 14, 1939, No. 20530. Convention date, July 16, 1938. [Class 32] In apparatus for distilling water by using the neat generated by an internal combustion engine the water is circulated through an evaporator and a heat exchanger through which the cooling medium for the engine is circulated. The cooling medium is circulated through the engine A and the heat exchanger N while the water to be distilled is circulated through the exchanger N and the evaporator B by a pump C which maintains a higher pressure in the exchanger than in the evaporator. The steam formed is condensed in a condenser D maintained under reduced pressure by a pump G and the condensate is sterilized by passage through a coil Q heated by exhaust gases from the engine to a collecting chamber W, passing thence through a cooler S to a receiver F. Make-up water is fed through the cooler S and condenser D to the circuit the amount being controlled by a valve K operated by a float L; excess water is discharged by pump J. In a modification the cooling medium from the engine is heated by the exhaust gases before entering the heat exchanger N. The heat exchanger and evaporator may be combined in one unit. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts describes apparatus in which the water to be evaporated is circulated directly through the cooling chambers of the engine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
