531,660. Variable-speed gearing. BROWN, H. S. July 28, 1939, No. 21985. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a reversing friction gear, suitable for the propeller-shaft of a motor-boat, and of the kind comprising two axially spaced transmissioncones 17, 30 of different radius, with a doubledriving-cone 43 positioned between them and movable into engagement with either, one 17 of the cones is integral with a hub 16 rotatably mounted on a stub-shaft 15, and the second cone 30 is detachably secured to the hub and to the propeller-shaft 31. The stub-shaft is carried by an arm 12 on a bracket 10, to which is secured an internal-combustion engine E. The cone 30 is clamped by bolts between the end of the hub 16 and a flanged coupling-member 32 splined on the propeller-shaft. The driving-cone 43 is shifted by means of a hand-lever 57.
