Abstract

683,424. Toothed gearing. MARTEN, E. W., and ASSOCIATED LOCOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Feb. 12, 1951 [April 26, 1950], No. 10306/50. Class 80 (i). [Also in Group XXVI] Transmission gearing for valve - operating cams in locomotive engines is mounted in a casing which is itself mounted on a sleeve detachably secured to the gearing driving shaft so that the gearing and casing can be removed as a complete unit. A wormwheel 4, Fig. 1, splined and secured bv a nut 6 on a trunnion 2 carried by a driving arm 1 engages a worm 5 mounted on roller bearings in a casing 11 anchored against rotation by a pin 13 and mounted by oblique bearings 9 on the wormwheel hub. The casing acts as an oil bath and oil thrown up by the wormwheel is caught in partitioned horizontal channels 15, 20 and led by passages 17, 21 to the gearing bearings. In modifications the wormwheel is keyed to a sleeve which is keyed to a hollow trunnion and held thereon by a bolt passing through the trunnion, or the trunnion is made separately from the arm 1 and bolted thereto.
