Abstract

737,997. Outboard propeller units. WHITEHEAD ENGINEERING (WILLESDEN), Ltd., J., and DEWHURST, P. K. May 21, 1952 [May 21, 1951], No. 11850/51. Class 114. An outboard propeller mechanism comprises a propeller 7 mounted on a horizontal shaft driven through a vertical shaft 18 mounted on a pair of hollow trunnions 12a,12b, Fig. 3, for swinging movement in a vertical plane, and the vertical shaft is driven through a cross shaft 15 extending coaxially through one of the trunnions and coupled beyond the outer end thereof to an external driving means. The vertical shaft, which is driven from an external power unit through bevel gears 20, 19, 16, 17, is enclosed in a stem 1 depending from a head structure 2, 3 having integral trunnions 12a, 12b rotatable in bearings 13 bolted to a frame. The stem carries at its lower end the propeller shaft and may be rotated about its axis for steering purposes through a worm drive 8, 9, chain 23 and shaft 22. The head structure is rotatable in the bearings 13 by a gear segment 25 driven through a disengageable worm drive mounted on the frame. A radial flange 31 on the structure has a number of holes 32 which are engaged by a shear pin carried by the frame for supporting the mechanism at a desired elevation. A screwed stop on the frame facilitates the location of the shear pin. The mechanism is supplied with lubricant from a reservoir 35 by a pump 36 which circulates the lubricant through pipes 38, 40 to chambers 43, 44, 46 from which it can return through an overflow pipe 47 to the reservoir.
