Abstract

545,850. Variable-speed gearing. ROLLO, J. M. Feb. 26, 1941, No. 2611. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear has compound gear wheels 4 . . . 11 mounted on a driving shaft 1 and on a lay shaft 3. The large gears 4, 6, 8, are all of the same diameter. All the wheels are free on the shafts except the first wheel 4, 5, on the driving shaft 1 which is fixed thereto. A slidable take-off gear 12 splined to a driven shaft 2 can be moved to engage the large gears 4, 8, successively to obtain varying speeds. The gearing is preferably such that each successive speed is half the previous speed and is applicable to lathes and other machines.
