Abstract

531,380. Alloys. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. July 20, 1939, No. 21124. Convention date, July 27, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Welding rods for depositing a hard layer consist of iron containing 2-4 per cent. of carbon, 0.25-3 per cent. of silicon, 2-7 per cent. of nickel, 0.25-3 per cent. of chromium, 0.1-1.5 per cent. of manganese, up to 0.2 per cent. of sulphur, up to 0.3 per cent. of phosphorus, and 0.15-1 per cent. of aluminium or of calcium and lithium together, with or without up to 1 per cent. of boron and small amounts of other elements such as molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. In using the welding rods with an electric arc, the current is adjusted so that the number of amperes does not exceed 1760 times the diameter of the rod in inches less 250 ; and in using the rods with a gas flame the metal base is preferably preheated to a dull red, and in the case of cast iron the' flame may be caused to dig a little into the area to be covered.
