Abstract
530,185. Belt and chain tightening. MORSE CHAIN CO. June 20, 1939, No. 17968. Convention date, July 12, 1938. [Class 80 (i)] Shoes 18, 19 are pressed against the two lengths 15, 16 of a belt or chain by the action of fluid pressure on the cammed surface 26 of the ends of the levers 21 carrying the shoes. Oil from the lubricating-oil system of a vehicle engine acts on a piston 27 carrying the roller 28 acting on the cams 26. Ratchet teeth 32 and pawls 34 prevent retrograde action but excessive tightening causes bending of the pawls 34 which are slightly inclined to the end of the cylinder 29. Pressure may be sustained after engine stoppage by mounting a spring-pressed piston in the lower end of the cylinder 29.
