Abstract

605,984. Belt or chain tensioning devices. LAGONDA, Ltd., and KEMISH, P. C. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 626. [Class 80 (i)] A chain, belt or like tensioner mechanism for use in a system having a fluid pressure supply, comprises spring-operated means for applying tension to the chain or other member, and a pressure responsive device connected to the pressure supply through a non- return valve and capable of functioning as a hydraulic ratchet to supplement the load applied by the spring means. In the form shown, a pressure-responsive plunger 3 abuts against one end of an arm 1, hinged at 2, carrying a sprocket-wheel W. The latter bears against the slack side of a chain C which passes round wheels A, B, of the timing mechanism of an internal-combustion engine. The plunger 3 is urged outwardly by spring pressure and also by fluid pressure supplied to the plunger cylinder through a non-return valve. In other forms, the sprocket-wheel W is mounted for rotational movement on a fixed bracket and is urged in the operative direction by the spring and fluid pressure means.
