Abstract

A chain tensioner comprises a slipper 15, 16 pressed against a chain 10 by the action of hydraulic pressure in a cylinder 12 on a ram 13 carrying the slipper, a piston 20 on the ram moving with clearance in an enlarged outer end portion 19 of the cylinder to form a fluid damper for the slipper. Fluid can leak round the ram 13 from the main bore of the cylinder 12 into the enlarged portion 19, and past the piston 20 out of the cylinder. A bore 18, 17 conveys oil for lubrication to the face of the slipper.
