Abstract

528,025. Iron oxides. STEATIT-MAGNESIA AKT.-GES. April 26, 1939, No. 12533. Convention date, April 27, 1938. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A process for the manufacture of ferromagnetic material for dust cores consists in combining oxygen, which may be free or in chemical combination with other gases, completely with iron at a temperature of between 900‹C. and 1300‹C. The iron which is given a large surface area by cutting into strips, sheets, or wires, is heated to the required temperature in a gas containing oxygen at low partial pressure, preferably H 2 O and CO 2 leading to the formation of oxides, having between 70 per cent. and 75 per cent. iron content. In order to make the product crystalline, it is allowed to remain from 3-12 hours at a high temperature in a protective gas, preferably the reaction gas. The finished product is very brittle and can be ground down to particles having a diameter of between 40Á and 150Á.
