[Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group V] Metal powder consisting of a mixture of lead with one or more of the medals iron, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, and suitable for use in pressed and sintered form, in some cases in admixture with copper powders, for bearings, clutch facings, brake linings is made by heating a mixture consisting of a minor proportion of oxygen-containing compounds of lead and a major proportion of oxygencontaining compounds of iron &c. preferably oxides or carbonates, in presence of, but segregated from, a carbonaceous reducing agent which may be coal, coke, or preferably charcoal. A suitable mixture may consist of 88 per cent. of iron oxide and 12 per cent. of lead oxide. If silica is desired in the product, lead silicate may be substituted for part of the oxide. In the apparatus shown alternate layers of charcoal and of a mixture such as described above, separated by' sheets of paper are placed in a chamber 14 having a central tube 15 containing a gas outlet pipe 3 and a pyrometer 4. An outer casing 22 is applied to the container and the whole is heated by lowering an annular furnace over it. After the reduction is completed, cooling is effected in a reducing gas supplied through the pipe 3.
