Abstract

513,254. Magnetic iron oxide. VECCHIS, I. DE. Feb. 25, 1938, Nos. 6009 and 25605. [Class 1 (iii)] Minerals containing iron, other than silicates, are heated, without a reducing agent, in an oxidizing atmosphere to incandescence, and cooled under non-oxidizing conditions whereby magnetite is formed. Suitable minerals include naturally formed iron hydroxide or " Gossans " (FeO.OH.xFe2O3)' ferric oxide, ferrous oxide and ferrous carbonate. The mineral may be heated for, say 1¢-2 hours, at 900‹- 1000‹C. in a gas- or masut-fired rotary furnace, and then dropped into water. The product is pulverized and subjected to magnetic separation. The separated material may, after drying, be mixed with charcoal, coke dust, powdered graphite &c. in quantity determined by the nature of the metal, more or less carburized iron or steels, that is to be produced. The mixture may be heated in a rotary furnace to 1000-1100‹C., the partly melted "balls" of iron emerging being introduced at about 1000‹C. into a melting furnace from which the liquid metal may be poured into moulds. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 222,815, [Class 82 (i)], 409,936, 427,604 and French Specification 785,685.
