Abstract

In the production of spongy iron, blast-furnace dust, ores, or like ferruginous material is mixed with fuel in a finely-divided state containing carbon equivalent to that in an amount of coal weighing 10-15 per cent of the weight of the ore &c. for low-grade material and not exceeding 30 per cent for concentrates, and the mixture is fed progressively with increasing temperature through a refractory chamber, jets of air previously raised to a temperature of 750-850 DEG C. being injected into the mixture in the final heating zone. The ores &c. may be moistened with water before admixing with the fuel. The process may be carried out in the rotary furnaces described in Specifications 312,667 and 337,636, [both in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.].
