Abstract

525,619. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1939, No. 6090. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] In a device comprising a cooled cylindrical metal envelope, a liquid electrode, and transverse metal members which are supported from the side walls of the envelope and provide a tortuous path for the discharge, each member has a flange intimately secured to the side walls. The container comprises headers 15, 16 welded to metal cylinders 10, 11 which are welded at each end to form a space through which water is circulated. An ignition electrode dips into a cadmium or mercury electrode. Flanged sheet-metal segments 34 are welded to the container. The anode seal is screened by a member 24. In another form, the screening is effected by complementary members one of which is arc-shaped. As described in Specification 520,183 starting and maintaining anodes are arranged within a shield, which is slotted at its lower end so that a main cathode spot may be formed externally of the shield.
