[Class 39 (i)] In a device which comprises an anode 5, Fig. 1, and a liquid cathode 10 arranged axially within the container, a starting electrode 12, a transverse baffle 21 in the form of a cooling coil, and a transverse baffle 24 which, with the baffle 21, forms a tortuous path for the discharge, the baffle 21 is rendered impervious to the discharge by means of discs 22 secured to the central part thereof. A vitreous envelope may be used, and cooling may be increased by a coil 19. In another form, the metal container 30, Fig. 3, has double walls through which cooling fluid flows, and the baffle 24 consists of an apertured metal plate secured to the container through a flange 39.
