Abstract

522,253. Rotary pumps. UNGAR, G. A. Dec. 2, 1938, No. 35237. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1937. [Class 110 (ii)] In rotary engines or pumps of the gear-wheel, or Root's-blower types, the rotors are balanced radially and axially, and the ends of the rotors are sealed by rotary rings 42, 43, and fixed members 45, 46. Fig. 1 shows a driving gear 38 hollowed out to accommodate an extension 37 of the casing. The second gear 40 rotates on a stationary shaft 41 to which is secured the member 45 which is hollowed out to allow the rotation of the ring 42, which is attached to the gear 38. The member 46 is allowed to slide axially on its key 41<1>, against the action of a spring 50, and may act as a byepass, under excessive pumping pressure. More than one wall may be allowed axial freedom. The axial length of discharge port 60 is slightly greater than the length of the rotor 38. Recesses 62, 73, are in communication with opposite ports 60, 71, for pressure-balancing purposes. Similar recesses are provided to balance the effect of the pressures in the ports 60, 71, on the gear 40. Grooves 94, 97 are also connected to ports 60, 71, by means of recesses in the member 45, to admit fluid for balancing purposes. Radial grooves 97, 98, Fig. 11, in the end faces of the teeth of gear 40, allow fluid which would otherwise be trapped in pockets 99 formed by the meshing gears, to escape to recesses in the members 45, 46. The pump may be divided into two or more parts on the same shafts 33, 41, with partition members corresponding to the end members 42, 43, 45, 46. In this case, the teeth of the gears in the different parts are relatively displaced angularly, to secure a delivery free from pulsations. Gears having helical, or doublehelical teeth, may be used. Rotor members having four, three, or two teeth, Fig. 21, may be utilized in pumps divided up by partition members. The teeth are angularly displaced relative to each other. The shape of the teeth are involute in part.
