Abstract

459,230. Rotary engines. MANLY CORPORATION, 250, West 54th Street, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Centervall, H. A. ; 44, Sidney Place, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.) April 3, 1935, No. 10410. Convention date, April 13, 1934. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine of the type shown has two fixed abutments 76, and two arc-shaped members 91 which may be displaced radially to vary the volume of the working chambers. Each member 91, Fig. 6, has slotted ends 95 which co-operate with tongues 77 projecting from abutments 76, so that the vanes 55 ride smoothly from one surface to another. The parts 92 are resilient and the curvature of the arc 92, 91, 92 alters slightly when the members 91 are displaced by the turning of the hand wheel 108. In the mid-position the arc 91 is concentric with the rotor. End discs 60 are placed on either side of the rotor 50 and have slots 97 to accommodate axial extensions 94 of the members 91. The rotor has hubs 51 embraced by extensions 64 of the end discs. Keys 45 provide the driving connection between the shaft 40 and the rotor, which, otherwise, are clear of each other. Inlet and outlet ports 65, 66 for the working fluid are located in the end discs. The inlet ports are connected to channels 110 in the casing, and the delivery ports to further channels 115. These channels lead to inlet and outlet ports 112, 117. Leakage fluid entering chambers 27, 30, Fig. 2, is drained away through 118, or may be led to the suction side in the case of a pump. The inner ends of the vanes are connected with the suction and discharge ports 65, 66 as the vanes pass through the suction and discharge regions, for balancing purposes. The resilient parts 92 are hydraulically balanced as the inlet and outlet ports 65, 66 extend on either side of the parts. The vanes are held outwards by centrifugal force, but mechanical or hydraulic force may be used. The vanes may be radial.
