Abstract

521,171. Ventilating vehicles &c. ROE, L. B. Nov. 11, 1938, No. 32785. [Class 137] A ventilation device for admitting air to vehicles, ships or aircraft, comprises a base plate a which may be applied to the roof, with a rearwardly directed funnel b over an opening a<SP>1</SP> and a covering hood c. Openings c<SP>2</SP> are provided at the front for the admission of air, and outlets at the rear of the hood for the discharge of water. The rear edges of the funnel are turned outwardly at b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP>. The entering air passes to the rear of the hood, where its direction is reversed, and then through the funnel to the outlet a'. Any water entering the funnel is discharged through outlets b<SP>3</SP>. A regulating damper may cover the entrance to the funnel b. A circular cover plate d with radial openings d<SP>2</SP> may be provided to diffuse the air which enters the vehicle. In Fig. 6, an air-device as above, comprising a hood c and funnel b, is combined with the air-extractor in Specification 400,726. An extractor hood e is arranged over an opening a<SP>2x</SP>, and openings are provided at the rear edge of the hood for the escape of water. Forward of the openings into the hood e an inclined plate is fixed to deflect air upwards over the hood and cause a suction at the hood opening. A cover plate dx arranged below the roof r surrounds the openings a'x, a<SP>2x</SP> and to the underside of the plate is fitted a plate h having a semi-circular opening with upstanding collar h' fitting the opening a<SP>2x</SP> for the outlet of extracted air. The collar is surrounded by a chamber d<SP>1x</SP> which receives the incoming fresh air and delivers it through radial openings d2x.
