517,870. Variable pitch propellers. SLAUGHTER, J. T. Aug. 6, 1938, Nos. 23277/38, 37120/38, 909/39, 6136/39 and 20127/39. [Class 114] The blades 7 are rotated by a root bevel wheel 10 engaging bevels 11, 13, one or other of which is driven from the engine shaft 14 through the epicyclic gear 24, 25, 26. The selection of the bevel to be driven is obtained by the control shaft 14 which slides axially to increase pitch by the governor 42, and to reduce pitch by the spring 40. The epicyclic train is only brought into operation when the governor collar 19 moves, this moving to lock the pawl ratchet plate 30 through the links 45, 44, 35. The range of pitch movement is limited by stops. The pitch change is initiated by accelerating or decelerating the engine.
