Abstract
516,546. Gas producers. DUFFIELD, F. L. June 28, 1938, No. 19167. [Class 55 (i)] A gas containing two parts of hydrogen to one of carbon-monoxide and suitable for the synthesis of methyl alcohol is obtained by passing steam through incandescent carbon to form water gas, additional steam being added to react with the carbon-monoxide to form carbon-dioxide and hydrogen. Half the total air is admitted through a lower inlet 16 of a shaft 1 containing a coke charge, the remainder being applied through tuyeres 18 at different levels to raise the whole column to incandescence. The combustion gases are withdrawn through an upper manifold 22 the air blow being continued for 10 minutes. Steam, after a steam purge, is admitted at the top of the shaft through upper inlets 20, and is continued for a run of 50 minutes, additional steam being added at intermediate inlets 20 to react with the carbon-monoxide, the gas mixture escaping through a lower manifold 24.
