Abstract

515,268. Railway vehicle axles. HUTCHINSON, E. May 27, 1938, No. 15910. [Class 103 (vi)] In a railway vehicle wheel and axle assembly of the kind in which the wheels are mounted for differential rotation on the axle, one wheel 2 is fixed to the axle 1, while the other or free wheel 3 is rotatably mounted and is prevented from axial movement by forming on the axle a a shoulder 1b which has a diameter equal to that of the hub 3a of the free wheel. Retaining washers 5, 6 are preferably fitted on the axle to bear against the inner and outer faces of the wheel 3, the washer 6 being secured by nuts 7, 8 engaging reduced and oppositely threaded portions 1c, 1d of the axle. The arrangement may be applied to independent axles or to pairs of axles mounted in a bogie frame.
