Abstract

337,936. Klein, W. C. Oct. 15, 1929. Axles.-The wheels 10, Fig. 3, are secured on the outer ends of tubular housings 16 journaled on a fixed axle 11 through ball or roller bearings 28 adjacent the ends of each housing, the inner ends of the housings being connected by a coupling ring 21 which allows relative rotational movement between the wheels. Each housing has inwardly-extending end flanges 18, 19 provided with packing rings 20 engaging the axle 11, and has an outwardly-extending flange 24 at its inner end engaging an annular groove in the ring 21. The latter is in two parts bolted together. The flange 18 abuts against a shoulder 13 on the axle, to the ends of which are secured blocks 14 for mounting in the vehicle. A disc 34, Fig. 5, may be interposed between the flange 18 and the block, and the housing may be adjusted axially by screws 38 in the block engaging the disc 34. The coupling ring 21 may be formed as shown in Fig. 6.
