Abstract
236,541. Compagnie d'Applications MÚcaniques. July 3, 1924, [Convention date]. Ball and roller bearings.-To facilitate the initial adjustment and also the adjustment after wear of the parts of spaced apart antifriction bearings 4, 5, the inner or outer race-rings are separated by an adjustable distance piece 14 comprising sleeves 14b, 14<c> having left and righthanded screwed parts connected by a correspondingly threaded member 14a so that rotation of the latter will lengthen or shorten the distance piece 14 and the parts are locked in position by elastic elements. As shown for a wheel hub bearing, the slidable sleeves 14b, 14<c> are secured against rotation to the axle by a key 20 and after the bearings have been adjusted the whole is locked in position by a nut 18 and spring washer 19. In a modification, the spacing device 14 is applied to an axle-box for tramway or railway vehicles having conical roller bearings, the outer racerings being held in annular recesses in the axle-box. The latter is divided axially and adjustment of the bearings is made when one-half of the box is removed. The bearings are locked after adjustment by a plate bolted to the axle end by studs fitted with spring washers.
