476,459. Portable-track wheels for vehicles. HENNEUSE, C. A. Oct. 31, 1936, No. 29672. [Class 79 (i)] A vehicle wheel of the kind in which elements adapted to engage the ground are movably mounted on a member supported by its pressure on the upper elements, transmitted through the pressure between adjacent elements to those elements in contact with the ground, is characterized in that inter-engaging means are provided on adjacent elements for maintaining the elements in their proper positions as the supporting member moves over the ground. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the supporting member comprises a pair of annular plates 2 secured to a hub 6 mounted on bearings on an axle 8, and driven, if required, through a shaft 9. Wheel elements 14 are freely movable between the plates 2, their outward movement being limited by lugs 15 on the elements engaging flanges 3 on the plates. Rubber treads 16 are bolted to the elements 14, and each element is provided with teeth 31, 32 engaging the corresponding teeth of the adjacent elements. A rubber pad 24 is preferably provided on one face of each element to transmit the pressure from one element to the next. In assembling the wheel the elements are arranged in a.circle and the treads 16 are clasped by a split band, the ends of which are drawn together to compress the rubber pads 24 and allow the lugs 15. to come within the circumference of the flanges 3. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, each element 34 is provided with gear teeth 38, and with a hook 39 passed through a slot 41 in the adjacent element. Pressure between the elements is between curved metal surfaces 36, 37.
