Abstract

514,682. Turbine locomotives. TENNANT, W. J., (Aktiebolaget Ljungstroms Angturbin). April 12, 1938, No. 11259. [Class 79 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A turbine-driven locomotive with a two-stage reduction gear arranged within the frame of the locomotive, has two pinions on the turbine shaft which are spaced from one another a distance which corresponds to the width of, the pinion or pair of pinions driving the second gear stage, the part of the turbine shaft between 'the pinions having a considerably increased diameter. Between the frames 10, 11 is a gear box 12 which contains the two-stage reduction gear. The turbine 13 is mounted outside the frames and its shaft 14 is connected by an intermediate hollow shaft 15 and flexible couplings 16, 17 with pinions 18, 19. These pinions are in one piece with their shaft 20 which is mounted in bearings 21, 22 arranged between the pinions and secured to the gear box. The portion of the shaft 20 between the bearings is of considerably increased diameter. The pinions gear with wheels 23, 24 secured to a hollow shaft 25 carrying the pinions 26, 27 of the second reduction gear. The pinions are formed from a single ring 28 and mesh with two gears 29, 30 formed on a common rim. This rim consists of separate coaxial rings 31, 32, Fig. 2, between which are helical springs 33 to prevent shock. To take up any relative movement between the frame and the driving axle 24, links 35, 36 pivoted to the inner rim 32 are connected to a floating member 37 encircling the axle 34 and itself connected by links 38, 39 to a disc-like member 40 secured to the axle. One or more idle gears may be included in the train. If a three-stage gear be employed, the first reduction is preferably disposed outside the frame. The pinions 18, 19 may be replaced by more than two gear rims mounted in bearings located between the outermost rims.
