Toothed gearing.-In double-reduction gearing for ship propulsion &c., a high-speed shaft 10 drives a low-speed shaft 11 through high-speed helical gears 5, 7, 7<a>, two or more intermediatespeed shafts 9, 9<a>, and. low-speed spur-gears 8, 8<a>, 6. Any or all of the latter may be constructed to yield circumferentially under shock. In one form, the rim 12 is connected to its hub 13 by springs 14. In a modification, the spurwheel 6 is in two parts respectively gearing with the pinions 8, 8<a>. By the use of straight-toothed gears, axial shocks are not transmitted from the low-speed to the high-speed end.
