Abstract

498,847. Torpedoes ; elastic - - fluid turbines. TENNANT, W. J. (Aktiebolaget Milo) July 15, 1937, No. 19680. [Class 9 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] The coaxial propeller shafts of a torpedo are driven in opposite directions by a turbine, mounted with its axis parallel to that of the torpedo, through two-stage reduction gearing, the first stage of which is mounted at the inlet side of the turbine and the second stage at the outlet side thereof. A pinion 10 is secured to the inlet end of the turbine shaft 2 and meshes with a wheel 11 carried on the forward end of a shaft 12, at the other end of which are mounted two pinions 16, 17 meshing with gear wheels 18, 19, secured to the propeller shafts 5, 20, respectively. The wheel 18 is provided with external teeth and the wheel 19 with internal teeth, but both wheels may be formed with external teeth, an idle wheel being employed to effect reversal of rotation of one of the shafts. The exhaust gases pass out through the inner propeller shaft 5, the end of which is provided with a cover 9 to prevent entry of water until the pressure of the gases is sufficient to blow away the cover, and packings 37, 38, are also provided to prevent entry of water between the outer propeller shaft and the shell of the torpedo, and between the propeller shafts, respectively.
