Abstract
272,052. Stedefeld, C., and Kruckenburg, F. June 26, 1926. Addition to 264,776, [Class 103 (iv), Railway &c. vehicles, Body details &c. of]. Gearing with provision for permitting flexure. In running gear for high-speed suspension railway vehicles as claimed in the parent Specification, in which a rail wheel is mounted at the end of an arm e pivoted at d to the frame, a gear-wheel b is mounted on the axle of the rail wheel and is driven by another gear-wheel c co-axial with the arm pivot d, so that the gearing is unaffected by movement of the arm due to the flexure of the suspension spring g. Two running wheels may be driven, each through a. similar train of gearing. Spring drives and resilient couplings.-The rail wheel is driven through resilient means comprising any of the following constructions, (1) the gear-wheel b, c may be connected to their shafts through the spring couplings k, l shown in Fig. 4, (2) the rim of a gear-wheel may be connected to its hub by two spiral springs m<1>, m<2>, Figs. 5 and 6, the rim being positioned relatively to the hub by side plates r which may also be used with friction plates s to damp the spring movement, the springs in this case being normally not flat spirals, (3) the gear-wheel c may be driven through a co-axial helical spring or through a shaft having the requisite, torsional elasticity.
