Abstract
290,067. Kruckenberg, F., and Stedefeld, C. July 13, 1927. Addition to 264,776, [Class 103 (iv), Railway &c. vehicles, Body details &c. of]. Elevated-railway locomotives.-Relates to the running gear for high-speed elevated railways claimed in the parent Specification and comprises the provision of driving motors either mounted close to the pivots on the pivoted arms carrying the driving wheels so as not to increase the unsprung weight appreciably, or else carried entirely on the spring-supported frame. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 a small electric motor a for shunting and like purposes is carried by the arm h pivoted at g to the body support or hanger i, the running wheel f being driven from the motor through internal or external toothed gearing b, d. The gearing may comprise one train, as shown, or two trains. In the construetion shown in Figs. 22 and 23, the wheels f<1>, f<2> are driven from an internal-combustion engine 4 and gear-box 5 through bevel gearing x and spur gearing z, m<1>, n<1>, z, m<2>, n<2>. Other running wheels may be driven from the gearing x through a longitudinal shaft 15. The engine, gear-box, and the bevel gearing x are carried by the car body, while the spur gearing and the running wheels are carried by the swivelling bogie q and to allow for relative movement on curves the bevel gear x drives the spur wheel z through a universal joint 12 and a floating shaft 10 connected by another universal joint 11 to a hollow shaft 9 which encloses the shaft 10 and carries the gear wheel z. Modifications are described in which one or two electric motors carried by the bogie q drive the wheels through spur or bevel gearing and spring or other flexible couplings.
